The present study deals with the synthesis of well-crystalline ZnO nanorods (NR) by simple hydrothermal process. Field emissions scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), EDS and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used to study the morphology, structure, composition and optical property of the synthesized ZnO nanomaterial. The characterization results revealed well crystalline aggregated nanorods with average diameters of ~ 455 ± 20 nm. These ZnO nanorods were applied for acetone sensing by electrochemical technique in liquid phase and photocatalytic performance was evaluated by degradation of Acridine Orange. The designed ZnO nanorods exhibited excellent sensitivity for sensing acetone (~0.7595 μ mM-1) with lower detection limit (0.125±0.02 mM) and photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Acridine Orange.
